Does The Crucifixion of Jesus find Enough Support In Historical Sources?

This is in response to the said thesis. I have answered this same question before, perhaps on my blog or in one forum, but I don’t quite remember. However, I will briefly run through so you can give it to him and help others who could fall victim to his unbelief.

1. Internal Evidence.

I know many people reject internal evidence, but considering that we use personal testimony as internal evidence, it is necessary to use it. When a police officer arrests someone,  some times they ask you for your name first. After you give your name, then they proceed to verify or authenticate your identity. So let us start by examining what the Bible says about crucifixion before we authenticate it with external evidence. Crucifixion in history Deuteronomy 21: 23; Galatians 3:13. The gospels all talk about the crucifixion (Matthew 27: 1-66; Mark 15: 21-38; Luke 23:26- 49; John 19: 17-34).

2. External Evidence

A. The Koran

Now let me ask you a question: do you think the Koran will mention Christianity incidents if they did not take place? In Surah Women 157 the Koran says that the Jews thought they had crucified Christ but they did not for he was asleep. So the issue is not if the incident took place but how it ended. Did it end up in death or in some temporal delusion? Thus the Koran acknowledges the crucifixion.
In Surah Imran 55 the Koran cites Allah telling Jesus he was going to terminate his stay on earth, make him resurrect and then bring him back during parousia. So it is a given that the Koran accepts Jesus' death but disputes the manner of death. Yet, it does not reveal how he died. So let’s leave it with history to settle this matter.

B. Josephus (Epitome of Jewish History)

In Antiquities of the Jews (Book I 18, Chap. iii, sec. 3; 18:63-64), Josephus narrates the passion and crucifixion of Jesus. One may question the authenticity of  Josephus having been born at least 37 years after the death of Christ, yet what we cannot question is that his text did correlate with existing texts. If I can give my date of birth to match with my birth certificate, then my account about the day of my birth is true to say the least. Josephus said this:

Pilate sentenced Christ to be crucified to satisfy the clamor of the chief priests among us, and those who loved Christ at first did not leave him but continue with us to this day. They are called Christians after him.

C. The Testimony of the Jewish Talmud.
D. The Talmud mentions the crucifixion of Christ. Published in 1943 in Amsterdam page 43 it reads:

Jesus was crucified one day before Passover. We warned him for 40 days that he would be killed because he was a magician and planned to deceive Israel with his delusions. Whoever wished to do so was asked to defend him, and when none did, he was crucified on the eve of the Passover. Does anyone dare to defend him? Was he not a stirrer up of evil? It is said in the prophets Deuteronomy 13:8, ‘to a person such as this, do not listen, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you conceal him, but you shall kill him.’

E. Tacitus mentioned it in chapter 15 of his work.

Tacitus wrote “

People called 'Christians', hated for their abominable crimes. Their name comes from Christ, who, during the reign of Tiberius, had been executed by the procurator Pontius Pilate. (Tacitus, Annals 15.44).

D. The Record of Rome.

The chronicles of the governors of Palestine (roman records that kept the official records of the governors) indicate Christ was crucified. Pilate’s narration on the crucifixion is still archived in the records of Rome.

E. Flavius Justinus’s Account.

Flavius Justinus made reference of th crucifixion in his mail to Emperor Antonius Pius in 139A.D. Later in 199A.D Tertullian made the same reference from Carthage.

F. The Symbol of The Cross

The Muslims have the Crescent Moon, and the Jews have the Star Of David (Six-pointed star symbol) as their religious emblems. Each of them comes with some history. The Christians too have the Cross as their religious emblem. It began immediately after the crucifixion of Jesus where they carved it on graves and catacombs where they used to meet. The history of it is that the founder of Christianity Jesus Christ was crucified on a wooden cross for the sins of humanity.

3. Conclusion

The crucifixion took place because humanity needed salvation. Without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22). All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ (Rom 6:23). So Jesus dying on the cross meets the requirements of the law. Since sin entered into the world via one man-Adam, salvation could only enter into the world via another man called Jesus Christ (Romans 5:12). Thus his death meets the atonement plan of God. An attempt to eliminate the cross from the gospel eliminates the process of attainment of that salvation. Therefore, it is expedient and paramount for Christians to know off head how to defend the evidence of the cross in historical sources.
Until then, God bless you.

Hi Hamilton,

How are you?

My comment is not a reaction to the article,

But I would like to share with you an article I came accross this morning on the internet, it talks about a thesis defended by a man called Gunnar Samuelsson of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. In that thesis, he is denying the crucifixion of Jesus arguing that: the many accounts of the crucifixion of Jesus even the gospel find little support in historical sources.

It is said that the man is a devoted christian who does not put into question the whole of biblical texts.

Is it possible to give a reply to this?

Can A Man or woman of God die of sickness?

Yes, he or she can. Elisha died of his sickness (2 Kings 13:14, 20). First without a doubt, Apostle Paul was chronically sick as stated in that passage (2 Corinthians 12:8-9), and he was not healed because to God his grace was sufficient for him. Timothy was constantly sick, yet even Paul his spiritual father could not heal him and could only ask him to drink a little wine for his chronic stomach diseases (I Tim 5:23). Trophimus was also chronically sick in the Bible (2 Timothy 4: 20). Therefore, let no one deceive you that simply because you are a Christian, you cannot die from sickness.
Until then, if God does not heal you, He will be with you.

World Cup: USA Robbed By A Malian Called Konam Coulibaly.

It was a bizarre match that saw the Americans come from behind at 2 goals to zero to almost win the match. The Slovenians were leading 2 goals to nothing before half time. When the American came back, they pulled it up to 2-2. They were more and more energized while their Slovenians opponents were all worn out. Then in dying minutes, they scored a goal, but it was disallowed for a previous foul.

The US was duly cheated against Slovenia because the South African Police Chief had earlier said he wanted the Americans to be eliminated in the 1st round, so he doesn’t have to deal with the American president visiting to cheer them up in the second round. Coulibaly was instructed to escheat them out of their victory. Each time there was a foul against the Slovenians around their danger zone, he will blow a foul against the Americans thereby nullifying the foul that was originally committed by the Slovenians. He worked for the South African Police Chief who cannot deal with the extra security needed to keep Obama safe.

Unfortunately, they used an African on African soil as the armed robber!!!!!!!!!!

Well, all I know is US 3 and Slovenia 2. You can say all you want. The US won that match, but Coulibaly stole it from them. Edu was instead fouled and not the other way
around except if Coulibaly was watching another match.

If you remember that in 2005 for the 2006 world Cup, Cameroon was lacking a point to qualify above Ivory Coast and had to win the match against Egypt in Yaoundé. For no reason, Coulibaly gave Cameroon (Enfant chérie du CAF) a penalty 30 seconds to extra time and Pierre Women lost it. God was for the Ivorians. That is how Ivory Coast qualified for the 2006 World Cup.

Coulibaby is one of the four African referees selected to referee this year World Cup. He has surely brought shame to his country because though Mali did not qualify for the World Cup, but his presence meant Mali was indirectly participating in the football bonanza. One thing is sure; Coulibaly has always seen things differently. He is very intrepid. Sadly though, it is African refereeing again that suffers another deficit!

To these brave boys in the US team, know that I will be praying for you for great recompense. People will soon realize that the more you afflict an innocent man, you drive God behind them because He (God is always for the oppressed. They will prosper and compound your (afflicter’s) sorrow the more.

Nonetheless, if the Americans have to go far (which I believe they will), they should avoid conceding early goals.

Finally, I agree with many others that there should be instant replays in World Cup soccer.

Until then, I wish the US team well.

Should the Nun have been ousted for Support of Life-Saving Abortion?

Last year, a Catholic nun- Sister Margaret McBride in St Joseph Hospital in Phoenix was excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church because she knowingly and willingly performed an abortion that jeopardized the life of both the mother and the child. I have already written about abortion-Freewill The Abortion Latrine-, but permit me add a necessary addendum due to this real life situation. God has made us ministers not of the letter but of the spirit. When we worship God in spirit and in truth, we realize that there are times we must kill to save lives. David and his men ate the showbread that could only be eaten by priests (Lev 24:9). The king told them they could eat it as long as they had not had sex (I Sam 21:6). That is because the bread was there to safe lives and the soldiers eating will be able to live. There is a time when the need and life of an individual must be cherished before religious or societal sanctimony. That is the Law of Charity that surpasses legalistic manacles. Did our Lord see it different?

Abraham told Pharaoh and later Abimelech that Sarah was his sister to safe his life from their covetous and lustful eyes (Gen 12:19; 20:2). God did not rebuke Abraham for telling the lie; rather, He fought Pharaoh and Abimelech. Despite those lies Abraham is called a man of faith. Jacob deceived Isaac to rob Esau his elder brother of their father’s blessings (Gen 27: 6-30). During the Spy-gate incident Rehab told the king of Jericho that the Israelite spies were not in her house (Jos 2:3-4). In her lies, her act is instead rewarded as faith in the Lord (Heb 11:31; James 2:25). Later Jesus uses that as faith for David (Mat 12:3-4). Jesus himself healed on the Sabbath. Thus working on the Sabbath Day (Mt 12:13); a day Israelites were prohibited from working (Ex 16:23-29; 20:8-11).

Furthermore, those who counted on the law to survive spiritually were under a curse because everyone who could not fulfill the law perfectly was cursed. That was a great lacuna for humanity, so God promised a new covenant with the houses of Israel and Judah. God intended to make a new covenant by shifting or perfecting the old covenant with the new covenant. In the old covenant, sinners were saved by works of the law, but in the new covenant, they are saved by grace. That way we are drawn closer to earthly things than we were before. As such, we give tribute to Caesar or unto who honor is due. By shifting the worship from physical to spiritual; we do acknowledge and believe that it is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that Jesus speaks unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Another thing that the new covenant would have done was that those who were not natural born Jews could not become judges if they fulfilled the law, and will actually judge natural born Jews who transgress the law (Rom 2:27). On this basis, devout men were accepted into the temple though they were natural heathens.

The Lord Jesus healed seven times in the Bible on a Sabbath Day when no man was supposed to do any work (Mt 12:1-13; Lk 4:31-44; Lk 6:1-10; Lk 13:10-16; Lk 14:1-14; Jn 5:1-21 and Jn 9). If it was bad then Jesus was a sinner, but the Bible says he was without sin (Luke 23:39-41; Luke 23:47; 2 Cor. 5:21; Heb 4:15; Heb. 4:15; 1 Pet 2:21-22; 1Jn 3:5; Heb 7:26-28). Perhaps it should be noted that God accepts killing in self-defense (2 Sam 2:22-23) or in defense of the helpless. Would God condemn a man who killed a murderer who was killing children in a hospital? After all, wasn't he trying to protect many lives? If we consider other instances the law was broken to save a life then we might be tempted to say no, God will not condemn the woman who aborts to save a life.

There are certain sins like abortion that though we confess and forsake their scars remain with us. Deep in you, you know you are a murderer; you know you have killed an innocent child. Therefore, if you do it just for abortion sake then you will deal with it all your life. But if you were aborting as the last resort to save the woman’s life, I believe there is no sin and God will judge with equity. Consequently, the sister should have been left to deal with her conscience and the Hippocratic Oath she took.

Until then, the nun should not have been excommunicated because she did nothing wrong.

Thomas Fozein: A Victim of the Cameroon Government’s Untruthfulness.

Ab initio, I had my reservation with the delegation ablegated from Yaoundé to debellate the Cameroonian Diaspora with a familiar song "the government wants you to partake in the building of your fatherland or motherland". Nonetheless, I believe that one must listen to a matter before uttering their opinions unlike those (who suffer from kainotophobia) who speak before they are even asked a question. The delegation of 4 people that came from Yaoundé was headed by Dr Eugène Wonyu, and was accompanied by Dr Thomas Fozein, Prof Albert Mbida and Mrs. Ebongue. On that soapobox was a golden mouth called Mr. Fozein Thomas. All the rest spoke in soliloquies and without convictions. Mr. Fozein was asked if speaking frankly would not cost him his job. The head of delegation quickly retorted that the HE Paul Biya sent them to have these frank discussions. Well, not only did they lie because Thomas Fozein was sacked for engaging the Diaspora, but all they brought was a bunch of fabrications.

Take for example, Prof Mbida said that Cameroonians think that the Diaspora is a bunch of frustrated people who could not make it back at home and ran to work abroad. He said that the entire Diaspora are prostituting themselves as homosexuals and lesbians to make money. God forbid that I should be a homosexual, but for the minister to carry it as a message to tell his citizens abroad, amounted to a process of deflating the Diaspora.

Immediately as Dr Fozein began elaborating on Articles 31 and 32 of 11 June 1968 of the constitution, it was certain that he was not just one of those who wanted to gabble. This would be too much truth for some people to bear because the embassies have been exploiting and oppressing the Diaspora through their nescience. Swivel- chair-critic, surely you want to ask me what the articles say. Well, now is your turn to read, and tell me too what you have read.

Thomas Fozein stipulated that the national assembly has three sessions per year. Session one is in March, session Two is in June, and in November we have session Three. He argued that, rather than distrust president Biya, the Diaspora should give him time since he had to pass through the parliament to get dual citizenship especially since there are still two sessions coming up. Consequently, he will make good of the promises he made to the Diaspora in France that by the end of the year he will resolve the dual citizenship issue.

What marveled me was when Dr Wonju said that they are consulting other countries like Ghana, and those in the Maghreb region on how to implement the policies. Tell him that most developed countries have dual citizenship, and if Cameroon wants to be developed, it is not a matter of expediency but a matter of necessity.

If they were going to spend that money to make the tour of the world in two months just to utter infantile banters, they should have given it for the construction of some health center, pay teachers for a school, or make desks for students in some government bilingual schools.

Secondly, that delegation showed that bilingualism is just in theory. How can a bilingual country using two languages have only one Anglophone representative with the other three who spoke mainly French? Mrs. Ebongue did not know much; however, she mastered that the Diaspora wanted freebies.

Cameroonians, here is the problem; the removal of Dr Fozein is an affront to truth and frankness. He was the only one who spoke frankly and openly. Perhaps the only who mastered much. Prof Mbida only remembered well that all of you are lesbians and homosexuals. I was learning that for the first time that the Cameroon Diaspora are all homosexuals and lesbians prostitutes. Mrs. Ebnongue knew well you wanted freebies and to escheat the government of taxes. Dr Wonju felt you all have overstayed abroad. He freely counseled those of you who were thinking of running back home not to because they will not welcome you with open arms. He emphasized that it was the truth. Your own country does not want you back home he said.

No Cameroonian should trust what the ambassadors will say because it will only be to repeat the lies you have been told for years. I will find the truth and tell you guys what is happening. I think that this delegation came out to sell the idea of consulate cards with the pretext to help you; meanwhile, it is for them top prepare themselves for the forth coming elections. Remember that the Diaspora will be able to vote and whether you vote or not, the number of registered Cameroonians would all be counted in favor of the incumbent. In short the delegation did not come for you; it came to tell you to shut up.

Until then, le Cameroun en a besoin et non limoger des gens comme Mr. Fozein Thomas car en lui porte une crédibilité de la nation.
