“Distinguish between salvation and obtaining eternal life."

There is a difference between a gift and the content of the gift thereof. Let us say that a father gave his children gifts on Christmas Day. The son may find a hover board or a PlayStation while the girl finds jewelry.  The hover board and jewelry are gifts that came in a package. That means, every gift is a package, but every package is not a gift. Consequently, eternal life is salvation, but salvation is not only eternal life.
Now let us apply it to our question. When you receive the package of salvation, you will find eternal life in it. In the package of salvation there is more than just eternal life; albeit, eternal life is the greatest and ultimate gift for mankind from God. I will take two main passages to exemplify this discourse.
Just immediately after Jesus left a house in Judea, Mark records that, “there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17).  Jesus explained to him that such a gift is not by works because no one is good enough to merit it. This is repeated in all three synoptic gospels (Matthew 19:16; Luke 10:25). He was not an ignoramus; he was a scholar (Luke 10:25), so he knew what he was asking.  If it is only God alone who is good, then that gift of eternal life is an unmerited favor humanity receives through Jesus Christ. Eternal life then becomes an inheritance, and we become heirs by believing in Christ Jesus.
On the other hand, the package of salvation that contains the gift of eternal life also has this as exemplified by Paul to King Agrippa. “Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee. To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” (Acts 26: 17-18).
Salvation contains deliverance from those who draw you away from God, your eyes are opened to make you turn away from darkness unto light and from the power of Satan unto the power of God, and you receive the forgiveness of sins and the inheritance (eternal life) by faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Until then, I hope this is clearer!
