Marysville Shooting: A Reminder to Update School Curricula Across the Country.

On Friday, October 24, 2014, 15 year old, Jaylen Fryberg entered the “cafeteria of Marysville Pilchuck High School inMarysville, Washington, at about 10:45 a.m." and shot people to death because a girl turned down his advances. It is now monnaie courant to hear that a man has shot and killed a woman who rejected his advances. This newest shooting is a reminder that it is time to revamp our school curricula because they do not address the lack of streetwise knowledge. Except we do that, mass schools shootings will only increase because the society has evolved greatly, but our curricula have not changed too.
Topics like "how to deal with rejection from the opposite sex" should be taught to kids from middle school to college. Many young men are unaware that a woman is not obliged to date them. They do not understand that problems are not only resolved with violence. Violence, whether verbal or physical is the weapon of weak communicators. When you check Jayden's Twitter page, he like many boys and men seem to find violence as the Midas magic wand. I do understand that could be the part played by informal education from the parents, but most of these kids nowadays do not enjoy any proper parental tutelage.
Many children are not aware of current events; meanwhile, that is vital because they repeat the same mistakes that others have done that are on the news. The news reporting on crime is a school of its own that awakens their synderesis.
Moral instruction (not religion) should be introduced into the curriculum. Certain virtues like patience, humility, persistence, discipline, tolerance, mutual respect, family values, honesty, love and respect should be taught in schools in a course. To be streetwise is to be conscious of our surroundings.  Young people should differentiate between secretiveness and privacy. Telling people your whereabouts is not getting into your business. It merely helps them to protect you better.  A streetwise person does not meet a person in a bar and goes home with them without telling anyone where they are going and with whom they are going.
Many kids do not know that people treat others badly because as children they have always curried favors. On the contrary, the older one becomes, the crueler the society becomes to them. When a child is born, everyone praises them and says how handsome or beautiful they are. No one ever calls a baby "bitch" or "nigger". When the child is in her or his teenage age, he or she starts to feel the cruelty. When she was an infant, she got her food by crying. As a teenager, if she tells her parents that she is hungry, they will ask him or her to make his/her own food. As an adult, if she says she is hungry, they will call her "bitch" or "nigger". At times, they could even garnish it with loser. Most kids who disappear are those who know nothing about the street, or those who were too “streetful” without accountability.
Schools should teach on how to accept rides.  If a child was to accept a ride from someone, it should either be a neighbor or someone they know. When doing so, they should inform someone about the “Good Samaritan” who is giving them the ride. Communicate the vehicle particulars and the information of the driver.
Classes should be held on how to use guns. Although I am not a gun advocate as I don't even own one, but I do accept that guns have come to stay and stay they will, so we better learn to deal with them. Although some people argue that guns do not kill, guns do facilitate the killing and create the possibility for a higher casualty. However, simply because some people misuse sex, we have not banned sex, neither have we even banned alcohol. Instead, we advise people to use them responsibly. The same caution should apply onto guns.
Students should be taught on street manners like how to communicate efficiently. The most efficient communication is not a monologue but a dialogue. In communication, people debate, agree, disagree and disagree to agree or agree to disagree.
If Jaylen was taught that it was normal for a woman to reject him, he would not have killed anyone simply because a girl refused him and was going out with another student. He is not even alone as you know that there are many young people who have killed this year simply because some lady stuffed their advances. The burden is ours to bear, and we can make good with a streetwise curriculum.

Until then, I hope that we will update our curricula.
