How many times have you heard people say they sleep like a baby? Paradoxically, it is true. Many people sleep like a baby. They get up every now and then and cry in the night. A baby gets up many times in the night, each time they want something and cry before day break. That is a sharp contrast to dotards. You will bear testimony to this if you have lived with one of them. They sleep like people in a comatose. Apart from their snore, you may think they are dead, but they are alive. Let me ask you again: do you sleep like a baby or like a senior? You smile don’t you? Ok, now let me tell you the spiritual implications.
Most children seem to be sleeping at stage one (the stage where a little noise wakes them up). Most adults sleep at stage five-a stage where dreams are possible because your mind relaxes, and in your subconscious, you can revisit unfulfilled activities (Job 33:15). Isn’t that why the Bible says Old men will dream dreams, and young men will see visions (Joel 2:28)? They will dream dreams because they are old; they can no more do anything. Now they only dream of what was and what will be. On the contrary, the young men see visions because they are strong, and the sky is their limit.
Many people lose sleep because they are worried (Esther 6:1 Prov 3:24), and others sleep well because they are at peace (Psa 4:8). Others sleep because they are lazy (Prov 6:9-10), and as you know, most dotards are very lazy because dotage has taken away their strength. Others sleep because they are tired.
Remember again that wealth is not a guarantee for sleep (Eccl 5:12) else the rich will not be abusing sleeping pills. Some boast that God will prepare a table before them in the presence of their enemies, but they don’t even have food on it. Others have houses, but they cannot sleep because they don’t have enough money to pay the bills. Some have the houses and the money, but they cannot sleep because they are all sick: cancer here, diabetes there, and arthritis over there. Let me tell you: there is hope in the horizon, for you will prosper in the midst of your oppression (Ex 1:12)!
If pride comes before a fall, peace comes before sleep. To experience true sleep and peace, you must give your life to Jesus as your Lord and Savior. If you have given your life to Jesus, but you still cannot sleep, you must check and see if you have cast your cares unto him. if you have taken your burdens to Jesus. He will give you rest. And as your soul rests in sleep, God will work on you. It was during sleep that God took out a rib to make Eve. It was during sleep that Delilah took away Samson’s strength (Judges 16:19). During sleep, God repairs your brain. In the Cortex area of the brain sleep helps the dendrites to grow.
Have you always thought why John always leaned on the chest of Jesus to feel his heartbeat? It is in deep sleep that we can actually hear God speak to us. Look at Daniel (8:18), or Jeremiah (31:26); they heard God when their souls were at rest. When we are troubled, we cannot sleep (Dan 2:1; 6:18), and when our bodies are not at rest, our spirits may not be too.
Jesus said that we should be like little children. Just as the babies get up and cry every two hours for food, you should know that in perilous times like this, we must watch and pray, for we know not when the master will return. More so, seeing that the kingdom of God is suffering violence, the Christians must stay awake during the day in prayers so that God will speak to them in their sleep (calm moments) on how to take it back.
Until then, both stages of sleep are necessary.
