Solving the Manyu Schism

The Manyu community like many African communities does not know peace. They are divided into subgroups and sub groups into sub groups. Most of the groups like student associations have problems. I mean even football teams too are divided. The problem of Manyu is not the Ako/Besong Team. There is no guarantee that if the Ako/Besong team left power today there would be peace. To be fair to the Manyu people, there is also no guarantee that the Agbor/Ebini Team would have brought the coveted and elusive peace. The problem is not the absentee ballots or the failed convention of 2009 because before this incident, there was already division. The problem is not even the 2001 failed convention because before then there were two camps even before going to the convention grounds. Each of these problems only helped to add inflammable into the burning fire. The problems could be summed up in these words: the decay of culture and traditions, the quick rise in arsonists-firefighters and the crab syndrome. These issues have flummoxed the Manyu people.

It was a given that the younger people respected the older people, and the older people served as elders. The reverse is now true as the older ones abandoned their posts to debase themselves to the level of those looking up to them. For example, when a Sesekou wrongfully passed an injunction against the death of another’s Sesekou’s father in total defiance of cultural norms, it brought a division that did not heal hitherto. Furthermore, the community lacks mentors and mentees. Now everyone wants to become a Sesekou and every Sesekou is equaled to the other Sesekou. Sesekous will soon outnumber bhoh mgbes in America and Europe. That quest to control turfs has brought serious skirmishes that extended to the general Manyu community.

The second problem we face is the rise in Arsonists-firefighters. This reminded me of a program I watched on TruTV about John Leonard Orr. He was a former arson investigator with the Glendale Fire Department in Southern California. He set the fire, and minutes later, he will pull up with a firefighter truck to extinguish it. He did that many times, until he was finally caught by the use of forensic science. We have people who act as Iago in our community; trying to make themselves the kingmakers or avenge failed vendettas. They make people knock their heads, and then they come back days later as reconcilers to propose peace deals and conferences.

The third major problem the Manyu people face is the Crab Syndrome. They are always trying to destroy each other. A clear example was when a manyu son; a non CPDM member wrote an email to castigate another Manyu son on a CPDM affair he was not even a member just to support his friend the ambassador. How do you expect the one sinned against to support with a clean heart those sinning against him? Each time we hear that a Manyu child is somewhere, we rush to destroy him. As you drag them down, they is much dragging going on at the base of the pyramid because the top of the pyramid is never crowded. Our world becomes very small, and we spend our time talking about who is sleeping with whose wife, and who is stealing from who. Or we talk about who never graduated from college, and who is a nurse with a stolen diploma. Thank God for people like us who come to equity with clean hands; I should have been finished by now!

Here are a few solutions. We must be civil and traditionally conscious that there must be respect between the young and the old, and the old must respect themselves. We must rebuke or redress wayward older people and same for the young people who misbehave in the community. I know this seems thorny especially because sometimes we find it difficult to rebuke our friends. We must be vigilant not to succumb to the whims and caprices of arsonists-firefighters. We must always remember what Donalbain in Macbeth says “There's daggers in men's smiles: the near in blood, the nearer bloody”. More so, we must love one another. I agree that we lack love; however, love does not exempt open rebuke my friends. Just because I am your friend does not mean I cannot disagree with your opinion or lifestyle. Except we do these things, we will perpetually diagnose the phony problems and expend energy on counterfeit solutions. No new constitution will do a thing, for we have a constitution, but we lack people willing to apply the letter with the spirit. Until we can soak our spirits in these three points, we will forever remain a divided people.

Until then, long live the Manyu people.

Valentine’s Day Is Not For Some of You.

Valentine’s Day has become very important and significant to many, but very few remember the importance for its commemoration. It all began when Valentine: a priest was killed for encouraging warring soldiers to get married. He was arrested, jailed and later martyred by Emperor Claudius II. Thenceforth, a day was created to commemorate his act and sacrifice of love. Today love is shown on this day in many ways. Some send gifts and others go out for dating, yet the component of sacrificial love is what has been but absent from this day; though, it was the most important ingredient in St. Valentine’s life. Nowadays, when I hear people make noise about love, I always smile because I realize many do not know what they are talking about. They think it starts and ends with infatuation (which is not even love) or sex. I will seize this opportunity to comment on what is true love.

Love is very patient and kind. How many of us are patient with people? Some of you on this very day will use a grenade to kill a cockroach. I read a girl who broke off with the boyfriend because she found a racy text message. It happened that it was the mistake of the phone company . This incident violates all the characteristics of love.

Love is never jealous or envious. How do you have a spouse or girlfriend, and you do not seek their betterment? You only want to be the only one. When they prosper you worry. Some people have refused to invest in the lives of their spouses for fear they become better than them. That is not love!

Love is never boastful or proud. Those of you who always remind your spouse that without you, they would have been dust might want to think twice. “I picked you from dust and made you glass. You are nothing”. They will say. Sometimes I hear people insult their spouses that I wonder if they know what they mean by "I love you".

Love does not insist its way. In America they talk of being assertive. Love is not assertive. It does not demand its own. To some people either their way or no way. “If we are not going on vacation I am not going out” they will say. Is that love?

Love is not irritable or touchy. Too many cannot put up with the least irritation. Anything that seems different becomes a source of problems. Everything is touchy to them. Some fight for the TV remote.

Love does not hold grudges and does not even realize when people offend it. There are couples or people in a relationship who will count every least thing that their partner does to them. They keep it, and when he does another one, they add and keep stockpiling until one day, they start to list his/her sins to him or her.

Love is always loyal no matter the cost. Look at the TV and you will know how much the world lacks love. A lover falls in sin and the first thing they talk about is kicking him/her to the curve. Look today how some people have lost love because they lost their jobs. Others lost love because they became sick. Where is your loyalty? Why are you celebrating Valentine’s Day? You should not celebrate because you do not have love.

Love always believes in your partner, always expects the best of them and always defends and preserves them. Do you believe in your partner, or you tell them they will be nothing? You do not even believe in their driving. You do not believe they can do anything good. When your relatives are talking evil of your lover, you join them and tear the poor person apart. Then Valentine’s Day is not for you. You will need to revisit your definition of love because apparently you do not love.

As we celebrate, we should know that Valentine’s Day goes beyond just exchanging gifts or inviting each other over or even having sex. Sex especially is the apex of love between two lovers. Therefore, if you want this day to be meaningful, you must learn to be patient and kind with your lover. Learn not to be jealous and envious of them. Stop trying to make your way the only way. You should refrain from always trying to drive the fly in the living-room with tear gas. And above all, let loyalty be number One in your agenda. That is when Valentine’s Day when bonded with gifts and sex will be more meaningful than mere empty words or perfunctory acts.

Until then, Happy Valentine’s Day.

Why Does My Mother-In-Law Hate Me?

January 31, 2009, Tetyana Nikitina was gunned down by Mary Nace Hanson: her former mother-in-law . May 4, 2006, a bus driver killed his wife, mother-in-law and himself . On the 4th of this month, David Brubaker beat his elderly-and-wheel chair mother-in-law . Ferdinand Earle was once reported to have put out his mother-in-law and her sons out of his house . Just these few stories will tell you how much mothers-in-law have been caricatured as the evil machines that ruin marital homes. Without a doubt, some mothers-in-law could be like a thorn in the flesh; perhaps even more than an evil spirit. They want to rule your house. That has never gone well with most daughters-in-law, and the result has always been catastrophic. I have written an article on in-laws , but today I will write specifically on mother-in-law. I will acknowledge the problem posed by the nuisance of mother-in-law, unravel the causes, and propose some solutions, so your mother-in-law will no more be a negative stimulus. Nonetheless,it is not every mother in-law who is bad. There are some who really love you,and their corrections are really genuine and should be taken into consideration.

The mother-in-law is a human being and not a monster. Every human being is sensitive to love, and everyone who has been touched by love produces joyful actions. This problem of mother-in-law interference did not start today. It began years ago when a young girl who has been betrothed was sent to live with her future mother-in-law to learn the art of housewifery. Even when the daughter-in-law is a full wife, the mother-in-law still came to the house to give her lectures. At times, they wanted to correct you on how to serve your husband or wife.

Some mothers-in-law love their jobs as teachers that they want to die on the front of duty. One responsibility of the teacher is that they must bear the responsibility of the student in class. Most mothers-in-law think that they carry the responsibility of their son’s or daughter’s home. The mother-in-law intends to create a warm and positive environment for her student, but she creates instead a one sided situation that favors only her daughter or son. It is true that the daughter-in-law was her ex student, but once she goes to her home, she is no more her student. She must accept that and celebrate her graduation.

The mother-in-law may have a foothold deep into the marriage depending on how their son or daughter permits it. If you spend all your life reporting everything your wife or husband has done to you, you will not make your mother feel like she should stay away from the home. Those complaints awake her teacher instinct, and she thinks your husband or wife needs a basic lesson in home-training. The first time your mother wants to rule over your wife or husband tell her to stay out, so you can deal with it. Take your spouse into the room and tell them what is wrong. Don’t start calling him jerk in front of your mother. You give mother-in-law the right now to ruin your home.

One other thing that encourages mothers-in- law to intervene into homes is the notion that your wife is their wife. In most African languages, we have names for step-brother or step-sister, but we do not have names for in-law, uncle, aunt, cousin. We call them by explanation. Consequently, your wife is the family’s wife and your uncle is your father. So the mother-in-law feels it her right to educate the daughter-in-law whom she calls her own daughter. Now in the West, it was the same thing though the appellation for the different relatives was present, but one’s wife was the wife of the family. That was when family values were still alive. Now that everything is in topsy-turvy, the daughters-in-law and sons-in-law want to set boundaries. They want to tell her how long she can stay with them and who controls the house. In short, they want to assert themselves. So in most cases we use a grenade to kill a cockroach.

Naomi was married to Elimelech. They had two sons: Mahlon and Chilion. Due to famine, they moved from Bethlehem to Moab. Not long after their arrival, Elimelech died. Their two sons married two Moabites: Orpah and Ruth. Then the two husbands died leaving the two women with their mother-in-law. Rather than run away they insisted to stay with her. She even entreated them to go back to their parents, but they refused. Would they have longed to stay with her if she treated them badly? From her name you could know her character. Her name Naomi means pleasant. Today daughters-in-law feel like pleasing their family-in-law is the lack of being firm or even being a door mart. No woman that will be in loggerheads with her family-in-law will be happy. As you all know, people like to be pleased. Pleasing is a sign of love rather than weakness.

These are the characteristics of love. Love is patient, kind, does not envy, is not proud, is not selfish, is not easily provoked and does not think evil. Love does not brag in sin, but it rejoices in truth. Love is always loyal, it always trusts, it always believes in their skills, and it always protects and preserves them. Today once mother-in- law comes in the love that spouses had for each other starts to fail. Where is your loyalty? I know that is one thing that really lacks nowadays.
Whatever you do to people, please remember to love thy neighbor as thyself and do unto others what you want them do unto you.

Until then, love your mother in law.

Zacchaeus Forjindam: The Innocent Man

Since the advent of the Forjindam saga, I had decided to stay quiet, but as days passed by, I felt it was wrong for me to sit quiet while an innocent man languishes in jail as a casualty of personal vendettas. I pray your indulgence to read the story with an open mind. For more than two years now, Zachaeus Forjindam- the former general manager of Chantier Naval et Industriel du Cameroun (CNIC) has been in jail on corruption and embezzlement charges. Antoine Bikoro, Forjindam’s assistant was appointed to replace him; while, he decays in prison.

Zachaeus Forjindam’s case does not win him public support and sympathy because he was CPDM "charge des missions" for the North West. He was one of the Santa six who against popular public opinion prayed for President Biya to rule again for 25 more years. They were even labeled the Six Santa Mad Men. It is alleged that during one CPDM meeting Forjindam sprayed the people with money. He gave FCFA 10 millions to be equally divided amongst 20 CPDM Parliamentary aspirants from the North West, and he added a generous offer of 1 million to a CPDM grenade victim.

In early 2008, Forjindam’s name was the 32nd name on the 61 names list that was published as those the Hawk (Operation Epervier’s) had his eyes on. He was sacked on May 7, 2008 and immediately arrested and locked up in New Bell Douala Prison on corruption and embezzlement charges. Immediately after Forjindam’s absence, the shipyard sank into a serious recession. Antoine Bikoro the man who replaced Forjindam was accused of maltreating workers up to a point where they wanted to go on strike.

When Forjindam was arrested, he was forgotten by even his comrades of the Santa Section. In August, 2008, to save face, the Northwest Elite visited him in Prison.

October 22, it was disclosed that Forjindam's cook was offered a bribe of FCFA 3 million to poison his food.

On Thursday, November 06, 2008 his supporters protested during a Santa CPDM rally. After his arrest his name became an anathema amongst the Santa Section led by John B. Ndeh. On November 11, 2008 rumors had it that he would be released from prison, but it did not happen.

On November 21, 2008 Forjindam went before the judge again. It was then revealed that there were three people against Forjindam: Louis Claude Nyassa, the chairman of the Board of Directors, Antoine Bikoro Alo’o, general manager of CNIC and CNIC’s chief accountant: Charles Kooh II. According to press reports, Mr. Nyasa and even Bikoro (Forjindam’s assistant) neither had evidence nor even the right to bring a case against Forjindam.

In September 2004, Forjindam single handedly prevented Chantier Naval et Industriel du Cameroun (CNIC) from being privatized at a time when almost all state para-statals like SONEL, SNEC, CAMTEL, and many others were being privatized. Under Forjindam, CNIC bought a private company called UIC- that repaired petroleum platforms for FCFA 2.1 Millions. For more than 20 years that he was at the helm, despite all the audits, there was never any embezzlement or corruption charges against him. His meritorious service reached its pinnacle when President Paul Biya became his number one cheerleader. The president cited him on national TV as a model citizen who should be emulated by every Cameroonian.

When his name initially appeared on the list of embezzlers to be arrested, current chairman of Société Nationale Des Hydrocarbures (SNH): Adolphe Modiki wrote a letter to CNIC Board of Directors chairman-Louis Claude Nyasa that legal actions against Forjindam should stall until the conclusion of the investigation. The Higher State Control (HSC) that is usually the one responsible to bring charges against a parastatal agent did not file any suit; rather, it was the attorney general with the complicity of the auditor and Forjindam’s assistant who filed the suit. That is why it is not the HSC which is the plaintiff. Thus, Forjindam is not a casualty of Operation Epervier because it would have been the HSC to bring the charges.

Initially it was believed that SNH which has 40% of the shares was the plaintiff. As wonders never end, surprisingly on February 05, 2010 at the Wouri High Court, the court could not find a plaintiff against Forjindam because the Board of directors was still deliberating on the Audit report. The Attorney general filed the suit from a complaint that was rashly filed by an auditor on behalf of SNH; consequently, the current Board of Directors chairman has been summoned to clarify the innuendo. The crown did not even know who brought the case against Forjindam.

More over, during the audit team cross-examination, Forjindam was not consulted though the general manager at the time. As you know, there is no way an audit will be done without the president or CEO of the company being asked questions.

Rumors have it that it was an intrigue between the South West and Beti politicians.

Therefore, if you ever believe in justice, it is time to request the release of Forjindam until SNH brings the report of the audit. What has happened to Forjindam could happen to anyone. Forjindam’s greatest sin is that he is too kind to a fault; he will give to even strangers. The North Westerners are known for revolting. This is a good cause for which young people should revolt day and night until Forjindam is released. Worst still, since he left, Chantier naval has been slowly but steadily slumping into an irrecoverable coma. He might be a devil, but compared to those who want to crucify him, he is a better devil.

Until then, Forjindam should be released.
