Urgent: Anger Management and Tolerance Classes Needed.

As you watched Serena Williams throw her tantrums , Kanye West showcase his incivility , Joe Wilson disrespect the very institution of the presidency with “you lie” , and the boisterous Townhall meetings, one easily paints the caricature of spoiled children . Yes, indeed so spoiled that they think the world revolves around them. It is a show of the intolerance that has bedeviled us as a society these days. We have forgotten to be patient or to listen to the other person, and to realize that in so far as we see as through a dark glass, our opinions will always differ. I sit sometimes and listen to someone voice their opinions for at least 30 minutes, but when I open my mouth, and say just a line they do not like, all hell breaks lose.

You see, there is nothing bad with protesting a call, but you do not do it by threatening the life of linesman. The world knows racism is still ingrained in America but there is a better way to protest that Beyonce merited the awards and not Taylor Swift. After all, why make Taylor Swift pay for the broken pieces of the MTV organizers? It is of prime importance to protest against the health reform Bill especially if it will provide health care to illegal immigrants, but there is a better way to wait for your turn and make your point.

Time and time again I have sat in meetings and gatherings with most Americans; they do not discuss politics, sports or religion at work; not even within educational circles, because they fear to cross on people’s toes. The Truth can be inconvenient, impolite and painful . When a simple argument ensues they tell you they don’t want to talk about it. I have always said that violence is the weapon of weak communicators. How can educators shy away from religious, sports or political debates? Where else again will they discuss issues? How will the children learn that it is good to listen to dissent? Kids are trained to function in unilateral decision making skills rather than consensus which shows up when they grow and integrate the society. Intolerance is also why relationships easily go kaput. People cannot discuss, and they think a rejection of their idea is a rejection of their person. So they take it very personal.

Perhaps I should demonstrate with some news that shook the country. On September 21st 2009, a man was “charged with scalding his girlfriend's 1-year-old son” because the child used the floor as his bidet . A finger or a simple rebuke would have done the magic, but due to anger he wanted to skin the boy alive with hot water as if the little man was a pig or goat whose hair needed to be removed.

On September 28, 2009, An 85 year old man with a BB Gun went to the police station to threaten the police for issuing him a $250 ticket for illegally parking on a handicap spot . Why don’t you wait for you day in court if you are so angry about the ticket? No one is happy with those tickets especially seeing how corrupt the police is becoming these days.

A cop had stopped us for speeding 98 miles on a 55 mile per hour road. My co-driver was angry because he knew the police was lying. In my usual fashion I was very poised and calm. He took my license and went with it. In his second visit, I informed him that the truck was a Rider truck, and it does not go above 75m/hr, and that he was free to take it and drive it. He told us “then it was the wrong car”. He let us go. It is not the first time I was hearing such a blatant lie but I still spoke nicely to him with the hope of meeting him in court. I do not make him an enemy for his opinion.

On October 1st, 2009, “Six people were charged with mob action “for yanking an Olympic banner from the Daley Center's Picasso statue and tossing it into the "eternal" flame” . One can still express their opinion without destroying property. On October 5th, 2009, a Wisconsin woman lured his unfaithful lover into a motel where she glued him and his penis on a chair . If you do not want an unfaithful man the solution is to leave the man alone. You are not the law and so cannot take it into your own hands.

Carrie Prejean showed again what an underdeveloped mind could do . We have not been taught to intellectually defend our positions without adhominems or getting mad. You are asked a question; just answer the simple question with a sarcasm or understatement. That is when you can bear the message of “Still Standing”. Instead, she gets up in frustration, and walked out of an interview exposing her intolerance and ignorance.

Anger made Esau to plot the death of Jacob (Gen 27: 41. Many have uttered things they wished they never said and have done acts they felt should not have committed. The tongue could set fire on the human body but it could also set fire in a human life (Jas 3:6). Children should not be disciplined out of anger (Eph 6:4). Teachers should not write students up when they are angry. Finally we should avoid making people who tell us the truth our enemies (Gal 4: 16).

Until then, learn to control your anger.
