When Talebearers Ruin The Innocent

Three recent cases: Guy Randolph , Edwin Chandler and Shawn Drumgold drew my attention to this problem; the damage of talebearing. 2/3 plus percent of death sentences handed down are false . There are some cases that people know fully well that the person serving the sentence is not guilty but because of “privileged communication” an innocent man is left to rot in jail . The center of wrongful convictions ascertains that “Snitch Testimony is the Leading Cause of Wrongful Convictions in Capital Cases” .

These are some of those cases where rather than justice being blind it sees, and selects its victim. These are some of those cases where the law fails to protect the innocent and gives credence to talebearers. These are some of those cases where innocent livese are destroyed just to convict a criminal and make a big name in a prosecutorial career . These are some of those cases where innocent people are falsely accused and locked up. These are some of those cases where some who have poor counsels or could not even afford one quickly accept plea deals even when innocent. Therefore, today I want to talk about the snitch or the talebearer as the Bible calls them.

I had gone to Mbalmayo where I was attending some theological classes. When I came back for holidays, the wife of one of our late pastors from Kumba: mama Ebako informed me that the daughter was attending University of Yaoundé where I live but she lives far, and has to attend classes by taxi. So I told her that was easy; when I am away she can come and live in my house.

One early dawn two sisters in Christ came to visit me for prayers. As they knocked, the young woman opened the door with her loin on her chest. They asked for me, and she told them that I was not home. They then ran to the area pastor to inform him that they caught me in flagrant fornication.

The Rev called me and asked me about it. I pled to face my accusers. He joyfully brought them so I could confront them. In our mini inquisition, I merely laid bare my alibi, and asked them to call the director of the school and mates. I was in Mbalmayo on Saturday night, and slept in my dormitory with my mates. On Sunday morning, I was in church with the others. So it could not be me. One of the sisters confessed that she was behind the first sister, and it was the first sister who told her she saw me sleeping. If it was in the Napoleonic era, I would have faced the guillotine caused by talebearing.

A second was one of my students who told the class that she saw me in her aunt’s party dancing with one of her friends, and I was drunk. She had two other witnesses who seconded that they actually saw me, and I was dancing crazy. I had not attended any of their parties and so I asked her when. She told me that it was on July 5, 2008. The date coincided with the time I was in Houston for our MECA convention. When I told them that I was out of town on that date, she said then it was my brother (though i have none in America). Imagine that I did not go to Houston, and did not have a solid alibi, and they said it public with impetus added from her companions as witnesses. The drama would have been disciplinary measures that could leave me jobless. Talebearers can be so dangerous!

Another classic example that many of you may know well is Silas Marner. You know how some people usually pass the lie detector when they are guilty, the same lie detector could falsely implicate someone because every machine fails.

In Silas’ case, it was not a lie detector but lots because that was the only method they used in those days to determine truth. The church money was missing and the members after finding the money in Silas’ house, and casting lots, accused Silas of stealing the money. The immediate consequence was that he lost his good name and then his fiancée: Sarah who dumped him for his friend: William Dane. Silas goes on self exile concluding that in Lantern Yard “there is no just God that governs the earth righteously, but a God of lies, that bears witness against the innocent”. A life is almost destroyed because of false witnesses and a snitch. Most of these people who serve at times as state witnesses whom people call snitches are mere talebearers.

The Israelites were adjured never to bear false witness (Ex 20:16) or serve as a talebearer (Lev 19:16). Today those who say they go to church can accuse you with impunity and stand witness on a thing they know nothing about. Some of the so called snitches are what the Bible calls talebearers who cannot keep a secret. A faithful person is one who keeps secret (Prov 11:13). When a criminal in jail for murder comes up with a confession, and people believe him or her, it makes me wonder what type of society we are living in. Those words of the talebearer penetrate into your faith and fate (prov 26:22) as you witnessed in the life of Silas Manner or some of these guys.

The Bible tells us to avoid those type of people but instead we tend to cherish them (Prov 20:19). The talebearers come to light fire in someone’s life that will burn their future (Prov 26:20). When you sit on a jury and condemn someone as guilty, I hope it is based on inductive and deductive reasoning, and not the histrionics of the crown counsel.

However, note this one thing: “we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Rom 8:28). Pray for those who accuse you falsely, for God has a way of rewarding them. At times like Harman, they inherit the gallows they helped prepare for others (Esther 7:9) or at times nature takes hold of them from one calamity to another. But other times you get caught redhanded like Johnson and Simmons case.

Until then, mind you as you accuse and help convict innocent people.

Raccourcis to Financial Paradise.

There was a company that came, and if you wanted to join; not for shares, you registered with $499.00. That business venture did not have a serious contact apart from individuals you could hardly trace. They only had a cell phone and home phone; no particular office or headquarters that one could launch a complaint. Now comes our mortgage company with no name yet.

Then came 5Linx (which has more people cursing it than blessing it). Just because it is someone you know doing the business does not mean it is not fake. Don’t we say in Pidgin “Wich man no di comot for outside” (the sorcerer who bewitches you is never a stranger). Do you remember Solidarity, Savings and Loans (SSL)? It was a Manyu Bank that ripped off more Manyu people. When you get swindled in any of these bad ventures they blame you for being stupid. Most Immigrants have made it to financial liberty without passing through phony businesses. It is reckless and uncaring for anyone to introduce cronies to a commodity with no financial rendition.

Two days ago we had one, yesterday was this, and today is Mortgage Company. Most Orientals and black immigrants fluctuated to pyramid wealth programs as the get rich quick financial liberator. Hellas since it is based on the clientele base you build, they could not make it. First, they introduce the benefits and withhold the pitfalls. Secondly, they lack a mastery of their commodity that with a little challenge, they tell you to “leave it if you don’t want to do it” or refer you to another person to brainwash you.

People will warn you to research before you speak. There is no problem with “documented evidence”, but there is no need to peruse biased and propagandistic literature carefully inscribed to con the economic blind whose vaulting ambitions supersede their rationale. The trends and operations could be no misnomer if called Identical Twins. And history has not yet gone into abeyance to erase the memories of this incubus.

Needless to say that, no one is trying to destroy their efforts, but we are trying to place parapets to enable those who cannot afford economic periscopes to quickly discern the dangers ahead, and save their hard earned dimes. Shockingly the same people affirm and applaud those who hoard wealth through phony businesses up to endorsing the axiom “the end justifies the means”. Most of these financial paradises provide a choice with all hoodwinked alternatives that give the chooser no real alternative, but leaves them with the same dilemma of “choose how you will die: sterilized lethal injection or electric chair”. The end result is life squeezed out anyway.

As we scramble for the American pie, it is immoral to use the hair of our brothers and sisters’ struggles to light the fire of our success. Business like religion should harbor conviction and conviction is based on deductive reasoning acquired through the moral virtues we cultivate.

Consequently, this Mortgage Company may actually dick deeper holes than replenish our retirement hopes. As you know, the tides and waves upstream would soon reach downstream. It is customary for Teiresias to forewarn Oedipus (even if he does not listen) so that even if he does not see the premonition he should at least feel the presentiment.

Until then, be weary of financial paradise raccourcis.

How Dangerous Is Voodoo? Case Study: Mary Nabila Muma

On Wed Dec 19, 2007 3:19 a Beliefs and Religion forum member: Sylvia put out this SOS:

First of all, my best friend had an affair with a local married man. She suddenly started getting sick. No HIV, she had the test but her hair has fallen out and like scaly skin. Doctors don't seem to know what’s wrong. Do you think it's some form of voodoo. Any Ideas?

Vicky Ntangsi put out this caption: “Francis Mofor has done a terrible thing” in which the first paragraph read:

Just to let you know that your boy Francis has gotten marry to a big time prostitute called Carine Sanyi, a Cameroonian here in Minnesota. Carine Sanyi is a porn star who sleeps with all the men who ask her out. It is widely known that her mother Ms. Ngong Prudencia played bulur (voodoo) to trap this innocent guy down.

On December 27, 2008, Minneapolis Star tribune writer: Elizabeth Flores reported that Mary Nabila Muma sued Gladys Feh Gwamesia for using voodoo to seize her husband, Marcellus Ndanjong Muma. Muma was the one who brought Marcellus to America, bought him a car and helped him to become a nurse. Despite her kindness and love, she did not understand why Marcellus would dump her to marry Gladys. According to her, it was voodoo . Despite Mary’s belief that Jesus is her lawyer, she still believes that Voodoo can overpower her very Jesus.

However, on February 9, 2009 it was reported in the AMACAM forum that Mary Muma had withdrawn her lawsuit against her ex husband Marcellus Muma.

Thursday, October 8, 2009, 10:05 PM Mary Nabila Muma reported:

Breaking News in Maryland. On Oct 8th 2009, Cameroonians in Maryland have been happy celebrating after they Learned of the breaking news that Victorine Tafrey has thrown Manyi out of her uncle's house. Sources in Maryland report that Victorine Tafrey sent her mother to OKU a few weeks ago and she buried 2 goats, some say 4 goats, some say her mother stayed in OKU for 1 week sleeping on grave yards and when she returned to Bali, she was instructed to stay indoors for 2 days. She sent her mother to do this deep ritual so she can consume her Husband - Jerry Doh with Voodoo and have power to send Ni Jerry's niece - Manyi Gladys Feh Gwanmesia out of the home. Today sources say they saw Mexican moving Manyi's things out of Ni Jerry's home. 2 months ago, Victorine Tafrey succeeded to remove 2 Cameroon girl's who were renting in Ni Jerry's house. Some people say Victorine is planning to Kill Ni Jerry because of Property reason why she is using voodoo to remove everybody out of the house and start dealing with real demons.

The narratives above sound very melodramatic, but they are all real happenings, and they are an interesting jaundice to show you how many Africans are still haunted by the residue of animism. They have left their native lands, but nativity has not left them.

Let me quickly tell you how voodoo works. You take a doll, you make a representation of your enemy, and you use a spell on or place a hex on it. Of course, for voodoo to work, one must believe in the power of the religion, for without this belief, spells and hexes are useless.

In Sylvia’s friend’s case, it could be a consequence of witchcraft. However, witchcraft diseases have the following characteristics: they appear and disappear and do not obey treatment. Their cause is never seen by our naked eyes, scans or X-rays. They are never cured with physical therapy or using physical medicine, and the victim becomes psychologically disoriented. If that is the case, then what she needs to do is fast and pray. Such a disease can only come out by fasting and prayers (Mark 9:29.) But before she starts, she must confess and forsake her sin. If she is sick and still desiring that man, she will never get well.

There are many people under voodoo spells. No matter what they do; it never works. Doors are always closing in front of them, other women always seizing their men and bosses always skipping them to promote other coworkers. There is a spell out there that someone is jinxing against you.

Thus, we must remember that the practice of voodoo is against the word of God (Deut 18:10-12; Mal 3:5), so God will not support it against his own child (Num 23:23). That is why Balaam at the orders of Balak could not curse the Israelites. It is like going to a witch doctor or voodoo priest and requesting they curse a child of God. Balaam instead blessed them. Balak was angry and told him that if you cannot curse them, then don’t bless them, but Balaam told him that anyone who tries to curse Israel would be cursed himself.

Therefore, one must acknowledge that these powers exist as principalities and dominions. Consequently, only a spiritual battle will overcome them because we do not wrestle against flesh and blood (Eph 6:12). Some Christians have tried to transfer the same practice into the church where they think that they can name a thing and claim it or name a girl and marry her. It does not work that way! if it was working, some of you would have been the spouses of some despicable people who were qucik to name and claim you.

Listen: “if God be for us, who can be against us (Rom 8:31)?" If God opens your doors, no man can close  them (Rev 3:8). Know that that battle is not yours; it is the Lords. The Lord shall fight for you (Ex 14:14). If you put on the whole armor of God and use prayers and supplications, there is no voodoo that will overcome you because the Lord’s army with you is more than what your enemy has. Is anyone threatening you with Voodoo,  and are you a Christian? Hear the word of the Lord: “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them (2 Kings 6:16)."

Until then, Voodoo only works on those who believe in it.

The American Worker

There are two types of American workers: the documented and the undocumented. People work as white collars and others work as blue collars. All try to add their hands to the dough of American progress. The most successful US companies live on the exploitation of their workers. Like parasites, they drain the last blood until he/she collapses. Then they run out for the next victim. The cooperate world is socially irresponsible; tossing the worker like a used paper towel. Is there any morality then in the way America treats its poor workers? The moral compass of any nation is the way it treats the destitute and powerless.

As I watched those who had worked at Ford, GMC, Chrysler and steel companies lose their jobs just like that, I sat with my hand on my chin wondering what would happen to them and their families. That is the normal fate of the American worker: despite their longevity; they are tossed to the wind for survival. The American worker, though in a supposedly free country is not free. People lovingly always advise you to go with the flow just to keep your job. What an imprisonment! These are the invisible shackles and manacles of the American worker who must backstab the next worker to please the boss. Despite all of this, the American worker is still marginalized.

Is there a reason why companies like Wal-Mart are using now more the seniors than the youths? Cheap labor and profit making! These seniors work part time as such do not qualify for the 40hrs worker’s benefit package. Americans are losing work, yet they are still hiring workers overseas. They are still hiring people to do customer services in India and other countries. Shouldn't the HI and H2 visas have been suspended with the current recession? Why are these programs still continuing while there are many American citizens without jobs? Isn’t it irresponsibility to carter for another person while you are not fine? Isn’t it hypocritical to hire foreign workers while the jobless claims are at their highest in 25 years? How many of those workers for whom companies filed I-129 actually went back to their countries?

People always ask why illegal immigration is striving. Illegal immigration is not much about the immigrants but about the rich companies who want to exploit them for cheap labor and maximize profits. These are people with no benefits: no life and health insurances, and no retirement benefits. Above all, they have no rights. Who is that illegal immigrant who will risk his stay to fight a company owing him/her $1000? Relatives will assemble and tell you to let it go; that you will make more money. The mentality behind hiring illegal immigrants is because most of the people want to use them as slaves and payback for “ravaging” their country.

Long gone are those lies that Americans do not want to do certain jobs. There is no job on American soil that Americans do not want to do. The hiring of illegal immigrants and foreign workers is driven solely for profits and exploitation. Work should not be taken away from citizens and given to foreigners. Or at worst, suck out the benefits to care for them. Why not give the American workers a better healthcare so they will stay healthy and work longer? Why not guarantee the workers a better future after retirement so that they will find pleasure in the work they do now?

Until then, long live the American worker.

"Why Must Good Girls Always Like Crazy Boys?"

If the question is kept in this frame, it makes the good girl a victim; meanwhile, she is not. Though the crux is that good girls like bad boys, it is not obligatory; for they do that optionally. Perhaps, the question is wrongly framed or perhaps it is rhetorical because there is no edict or law that says Good girls must like bad boys. Why must good girls always like bad boys? No, they must not! They do that on their own volition which itself is influenced by their hyperopia, their quest for prestige, and their vaulting ambition for absolute power.

People shouldn’t really pity the good girls who like bad boys when their poor choice yields them the fruits of discontent because they have reaped what they sowed. They have all the tools to make the right decision, but they decided to go with their instinct. That is one thing that differentiates an animal from human in that, while animals live by instinct, humans live by reason.

Surprisingly, in the Bible there are many good boys who married bad girls rather than good girls who marry bad boys. In addition to the examples in my previous article, you could find Herodias and King Herod the Tetrarch. Herod was a good man who wanted to please his daughter as every good man should, but the demands were unreasonable. He should have used his rationale than his instinct to appease the daughter. Herodias (Herod’s brother’s wife who was now his wife) had already requested for John to be jailed for speaking out against Herod marrying her. That wasn’t enough to her, so through the daughter as the broker, Herodias requested for the head of John the Baptist in a platter as a birthday gift for the daughter. Such action exposes the extent to which good spouses can be influenced by bad spouses.

Many at times you see a good girl who has had nothing to do with drugs fall in love with a fool; indeed a fool. By the time you know it, she is a mobile drug factory in human body. Other times, you see a girl who has never cheated anyone, not to talk of killing even a fly, but soon she is a cheater and murderer; all because she knitted her soul with a bad boy. Modern day examples are many, but the lessons have never been memorized. Like a cursed virus, the same evil replicates year in year out with the old generation, the modern generation and the future generation.

Naturally, women have always been impressed with craziness than with seriousness as classmates and my students serve as exhibit A. The good guys seldom get the beauty queens, but the bad guys have them in abundance. When I ask the ladies why they love them, they tell me that they are exciting and magical. Indeed such magic has plunged them into a reenactment of the Tantalus Myth, and it has made them cry more than Niobe.

The bad boys are always the talk of the town, and the good girls want to partake in that ambiance and attention grapping circus. There is no reason why beautiful girls always like crazy boys.

There is emptiness in humanity that cannot be filled by material things except spiritual. Unfortunately, most good girls have not learnt that lesson. The good guys are usually spiritual, and do not dulcorate their verbiage unlike the bad guy whose tongue drips chocolate. Naturally, the woman’s anatomy possesses the innate frailty as the weaker vessel and emotional being. That foible exposes them more to flanneurs as they easily give in to bad guys, because they are a plate full of drama. Such excitement is what they like.

God girls sometimes especially the very beautiful ones are high maintenance, as such they need these bad boys who are at times drug barons, con men, swindlers: making the money machiavellically and spending without recourse. But must they love bad boys? Not at all! Again they do that because of their desire to partake in the zeigeist.

The bad boys know that they cannot mingle with bad girls because the chemistry will be cumbersome for the bad boy to handle since bad boy plus bad girl equals a lethal cocktail. But bad boy plus good girl gives some hope of the good girl laying her life for the redemption of the bad boy.

Until then, I hope you find a good boy.

Necessary Addendum to Divorce

Dr Bessong,

Thanks a lot and sorry for the late reply. Usually weekends are the days I use to write my articles but since the past two weeks we have been involved with many conferences and ceremonies, I have not had the time. Nonetheless, I will run through those questions. Let me divide your concerns into three groups: ABC.

Group A. TV Pastor, Geno Gennings of PA, in very strong words condemneddivorcees getting remarried. He described the act of any divorcee remarrying as adulterous and sinful. The verses you have just quoted are in total contradiction to what this other holy man of God, Geno, is preaching.

I am not for Divorce! It has been a long tradition for the church to claim that the Bible is against divorce. True it is but it gives exceptions and those exceptions are if there is infidelity or abandonment as exposed in my previous article.

Think for a minute; who keeps a contract when the other signee abdicates? Which is that country that keeps a peace deal if the other partner abandons it? Isn’t it natural to understand that marriage being a contract warrants the participation of both covenanters?

I don’t know in what style I should present the fact that if you commit infidelity in a marriage you break the covenant and are considered dead because marriage is a bond in blood sexually administered. When you abandon your marriage you tacitly have abandoned the bond and are considered spiritually dead though living. And in a covenant, only the living partakes. But since you are dead then you have no part in the covenant, and the living party is free to reenter into another covenant without it being digamy.

I am not trying to justify the unjustifiable, but I am presenting the facts and correlation for the layman to reason through and make a choice. The verses we quote have for a long time been used without any hermeneutical or morphological application. And even when used most have mixed up their inherited theology without attempting to make a horizontal interpretation. If we stay where we are with those verses then the Bible is very contradictory and if it is contradictory how can it be infallible and authentic to lead the lost sinner into the right path? But no, the Bible is not fallible; it is the absolute truth. The reason why the bible could put doubts into the minds of people is that many do not take time to read it; they parrot it as traditionally transmitted by either their pastor or mission.

As a young high school student I read the Bible for three hours everyday, prayed for one hour every day, and fasted three days a week with no food and only water. Those were my formative days and that is when I formed my theology.

Group B
I have also noted that there is no set or standard translation of the bible. This, in a way, could put some doubts in the minds of many.

The presence of many translations does not mean different information. There are three major types of translations: literal, dynamic equivalent and free or paraphrase translation. Though there are many manuscripts they all correlate with the Septuagint and the Dead Sea Scrolls. If a man while dying wrote a will that he left to his four kids. After his death and many years after those kids showed up with the same will though from different sources would that make the will contradictory simply because it came form different children?

Group C
My questions: Could we use both the old and new testaments to support the present?

The Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and New Testament. The Old Testament was an antitype and not the archetype of the New Testament (Hebrews 8:5; 7; 9:16; Hebrews 10:1). The former was a shadow of the latter. Therefore, both are necessary for the understanding of the tenets in the Bible. They do not contradict each other; rather they complement.

Finally, I want you to understand that while on earth, we all see in a blurred vision with many blind spots. Therefore, the glasses I use to see the world are not the only glasses that humanity must use to see because “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known”.
Until then, stay blessed.

When Is Adoption Wrong?

“Would you consider adoption”? A friend asked. “Not if we are struggling with fecundity”. I replied. “Is there anything wrong”? She pressed further. “What if I decided to adopt just for adoption sake”? She inquired. “Why are mostly guys against adoption”? She questioned. These are questions we hear and answer regularly from women.

The Bible is not anti adoption because Jesus was adopted by Joseph since he was not the blood father (Mt 1:18). The usage of adoption imagery to expose the relationship between God and sinners in the Bible (Rom 8: 15,23;9:4; Gal 4:5; Eph 1:5), and our place as coheirs with Christ, means that adoption is not unbiblical.

Many people have adopted children who were abandoned by their parents due to premature death, or because they felt they would be bad parents. Adoption is not a new concept in the Bible. However, it was not for adoption sake, but it was either to save a child or to feel the emptiness the adopter felt for not having a child.

The first case of adoption was Pharaoh’s daughter who found baby Moses in an ark of bulrushes when his mother abandoned him there rather than surrender him for death to comply with Pharaoh’s edict (Ex 1: 22). She took the child and placed her under the tutelage of a Hebrew woman because the child was Hebrew. In a twist of divine protection, it was Moses’ own mother who was employed to raise him up for Pharaoh’s daughter. When he was grown and eligible for the throne, she brought him to her to enjoy the rights and privileges as her own son. The princess’s reason for saving the child was compassion (2:6). One question then would be “are there no children needing compassion in the US that Americans travel across continents go and adopt elsewhere”?

There are at least twelve steps before you can adopt a child in the US. You need to brief your family, select the type, select an agency and lawyer, fill the application form, comply with the home study process, attend a pre-adoption and parenting classes, be matched or locate a child, prepare for the child, file a petition to adopt, finalize the adoption, and follow up with the post adoption services[1]. Consequently, more animals are finding shelter in the US than humans. What absurdity!

This is why many people cannot adopt in the US. One of my colleagues said that she agrees with the requirement for prospective parents to take parenting classes. So I asked her which classes she took before having her own babies. She looked at me and quibbled. Very few women took parenting classes in an agency before having babies. So why ask from others what you do not do yourself?

However, compassion for the child or for self should engender adoption. It would be selfish to adopt because we do not want to get old or just for adoption sake. Esther (daughter of Abihail) was an orphan who was adopted by his father’s nephew (cousin): Mordecai (Esther 2:15). Why was she adopted? Lack of parents! The imagery in Ezekiel 16:3-6 is one of compassion for which God decided to draw the Israelites to himself. He adopted them because of their poor (sinful) state that made them stink. One thing though is that no matter the case, the adopted child never forgets their roots.

Therefore, if a couple has never even tried to have children, they should not even talk about adoption. Adoption should come when you and your spouse have tried to have children but cannot, and then you can consider the option of adoption. And even then, it is not like a woman gets up, goes to the adoption agency, gets a baby, and brings home. It should be by consensus. As the idea crosses your mind then you invite the other partner to reason with you. Without which rather than a blessing, it will be a curse, especially if the child ends up being a bad kid. It would be all your fault. And can you imagine a marriage where one spouse believes their calamity emanates from the foolishness of the other spouse? You may be a statistics under the divorce court.

Until then, Adopt if you need a baby.

Would You Like to Marry A Good Man?

"Why must good girls always like Bad Boys" is a question Gabrielle asked me. Many times you have seen a good girl with a “Bad Boy” that many times we wind up asking why they are together or where they ever met. Sometimes too you have seen a very good man with a baaaad girl. You know what I am talking about. Don’t you?

It did not start today; it has always been that way. Can you tell us why Eve was flirting with Lucifer? Do you? Sometimes the bad spouse is so bad that busybodies will say that the victim is under a spell. Can anyone tell me why Abigail married Nabal (a man whose name means fool)? Perhaps not! Ok then why did good boy Samson marry bad girl Delilah? No answer still? One more time; do you know why Ahab married bad girl Jezebel? Huh huh you shake your head. Great, now listen to this oracle.

As you flash back again you can quickly understand that Eve’s tragic flaw was hyperopia (excessive lust or as we say it in Pidgin: Langa or Big Eye). Though she could eat every fruit in the garden except one, she still wanted the forbidden. She desired every eye-pleaser, and though wise, she wanted more wisdom (Gen 3:6).

Even when Samson had found that Delilah wanted to kill him, he still persisted in the relationship (Judges 16:1-31). Have you heard the proverb pride comes before a fall? Such was his hamartia. Samson thought that no matter what he did no one would ever hurt him even if he gave out his secret. He thought he would “.. Go out as at other times before, and shake up himself” as of old to walk away from his enemies. Mistake! Once you give your enemies your secret you cannot walk scourge free.

Nabal was a rich man and his name means fool. Do you know how beautiful women marry ugly men simply because they are rich? Abigail means father’s joy. It was not like Abigail did no know him as son of Belial (I Sam 25:17) but he was rich, and her desire to partake in his riches blinded her shrewdness. That is why she made amends of his trouble without informing him (I Sam 25:23-31).

Ahab wanted power and that meant even an unholy alliance would be accepted. Who again was better placed than Jezebel whose father Ethbaal (I Kings 16:31) enjoyed the favor of Baal as his name indicated? His tragic flaw was absolute power. Jezebel was a very wicked woman that everyone knew but Ahab decided to marry her. These were not blind marriages because before a wedding took place in those days, the families had enough information of the bride and groom.

God men are scarce (prov 20:6). Right? Did you say yes? Good! I have told you why people marry bad people, but I must summarize the characteristics of a good person from Philippians 2: 19-30. A good man is a caring person (v 20) and he keeps the interest of others first (v22). The same recommendation of selflessness is accorded to Epaphroditus (V 30). These two: care and altruism are key ingredients in a good man.

Conclusively, good people fall in love with bad people for the following reasons: hyperopia, prestige and power. They are not satisfied with what they have like the case of Eve. Or like Samson, their pride keeps them away from learning from the mistakes of other. They think it can only happen to others but not them. Or Like Ahab, they desire to be all powerful. Nonetheless there are still good people out there and you can know them because they are caring and selfless.

Until then, find God be with you.

Stop Texting or Phoning While Driving

Culled (and edited) from MECA-GA@yahoogroups.com Forum as forwarded by Chief major Agbor Fidelis.

“Do you see the motorcycle? (UNCLASSIFIED)
Mr. Phillip E. Brown, Jr.
G30 HQ, Administration Manager
One thing went terribly wrong in this accident...the person on the motorcycle was doing 155MPH.I wonder what the legal speed limit was on the street he was doing 155MPH...

Do you see the motorcycle?

The Honda crotch rocket rider was traveling at approximately 155+ mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The rider’s reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place. All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the
Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Wake up people; Stop talking on Cell phones and Texting while trying to drive. Put your Cell phone in the back seat!!!
Pass this on to car drivers or soon to be new drivers, or new motorcycle owners AND ESPECIALLY EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO HAS A CELL PHONE!!!!!

Why the Social Contract Theory Fails in Africa.

The social Contract Theory is the political theory that people form government for their welfare and protection, and that government must only rule with the consent of the people. Most governments in Africa are not formed by the people, and those governments too have never represented them. For the Social Contract Theory to happen, the citizen must give up some rights to form government, and the government must then give the citizen other rights by protecting him/her[1]. The question then would be "are governments in Africa formed by the people, and do those governments protect the people?" Can anyone tell me who formed the fondoms and lamidads? How elected was the government of Omar Bongo or Teodoro Obiang Nguema? Would those presidents who have ruled for 30 years plus say that they are voted by the people? This article will explore five main reasons that handicap this theory from flourishing in Africa.

Old Traditions that do not want change.
There is a serious problem with some African traditional structures that were not benign inherently. Those structures have not only failed but have brought in resentment. Take for instance the Northwest tradition of fondoms in Cameroon, though the polity of fondom itself is not intrinsically evil, some aspects of it thereof are, yet those aspects have not evolved for the good of the people. For example, when the fon dies, his successor who could be his son would marry all his surviving wives. It does not matter whether the woman is his grandmother or his own mother; she is his wife. Not to talk of the fact that an 18 year old may traditionally be obliged to use his pestle on the mortar of his grandmother.

Another weakness in that tradition is making the fon a demigod. Because the government was not voted by the people; it was inherited, the government of the Fon does not seek the welfare of his subjects. That is why with a little cocktail of multipartism, the explosion could be lethargic, culminating to the burning down of fondoms and Fons, and the killing of subjects.

While I am not advocating for the dismantling of fondoms and Lamidads, I do however posit that they should not bear absolute power since “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Though some of these traditional structures must be dismantled, others should be kept for posterity as their identity because it does not necessarily mean that African traditional government is bad.

When one flashes back at history, there is a huge contrast with the Mudjadji popularly called the Rain Queens of South Africa. Though they were not voted, they were there solely for the good of the people. Unlike the Fons today who align themselves with the government party for their personal benefit, the Mudjadji called down rain so the people would experience fruitful harvest season. Can anyone tell me how the Fon is helping the common man in Bambui village? Nonetheless, let me state those reasons why the social contract cannot work in Africa.

The Angry Young People
Africa has too many angry young men, and rightly so. In the 60s alone, the continent experienced 21 military coups[2]. If you look deeply into those coups, they are young military rulers snatching power. Mobutu seized power at the age of 25, Gaddafi at 27, Yahya Jammeh at 29, Rawlings at 32, Gowon, Nasser and Sankara at 34, Compaore at 36, Mutala at 38 and Moussa Dadis at 44 just to name these few. In most occasions, even the Corrupt Bargain of the military taking over to instill peace and eradicate corruption has failed since they end up perpetuating the same cycle of despotism, corruption and nepotism.

Africa is a gerontocratic society where age is equated with wisdom and status. If you are old, you are wise and you automatically have a place in the society, despite serious revelations that some people have refused to grow, and though some have grown, they have the wisdom of children. Most adults in African communities are the greatest trouble makers who incite and manipulate the young people to fight amongst themselves while they amass the benefit for their own kids and posterity. These young people know that if they have to wait for their turn to rule, it may never come, so they use coup d’états. African governments must learn to involve young people in their governments; not out of nepotism but meritocracy so that there is a promissory note of successful handing over. Why must they rule at 80 and above? Why can't they just do their two terms and leave? The young people are right to seize power if the old people cannot behave themselves. There is a reason why in the Bible the old mean dream dreams while the young men see visions. The old men will dream dreams because they have experienced many things. They are now old and have not got the strength to do new things. The young men will see visions because they have the strength, but they have not experienced new things. They have the ambition.

Émigrés who refuse to change
As you may have experienced it yourself, most African émigrés are social misfits and western wannabes; ever learning but never attaining knowledge. Educated people should be able to stand apart and be independent in their thoughts, yet most want to be seen only with their governments which muzzle their mental abilities to think rationally. Why are Africans in Diaspora enjoying the freedom and liberty in foreign countries, yet they support their governments who deny the people their inalienable rights? They cry racism abroad, but they encourage tribalism at home. If they will form a veritable challenge to their home governments, then history will record the annals differently.

Corrupt Foreign governments (embassies) dealing with corrupt government.
The foreign governments through their embassies have successfully contributed to the non workings of the Social Contract Theory. No one would tell me that all the foreign governments in Africa do not see the non representation of the people in their governments, yet they have maintained a blind eye when it favored them but cried on mountain tops when it did not. Bongo and Eyadema were corrupt despots but because they flung open the oil fields to them, they were benevolent. Meanwhile, because Mugabe did not buy into exploitation of the Zimbabweans by westerners, he is a rogue. Foreign governments have brought more darkness to Africa than they have brought light. They have refused to see the oppression and repression when there is a conflict of interest. Arguably, they have endorsed the belief that democracy cannot work in Africa, and that Africa is not ripped for democracy.

The belief that democracy could be interpreted subjectively, and that Africa is not ripped for pluralistic democracy.
Democracy is relatively new to many Africans where one person has been ruling since the country had its independence like in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Libya, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and many other African countries with benevolent despots have enjoyed relative peace and prosperity unlike those who have attempted to experiment with democracy. In the days of Ahidjo ruling as a benevolent dictator, Cameroon enjoyed relative prosperity and peace unlike when Biya experimented with democracy. Many Africans believe that democracy is a target one can see with their own kind of looking-glasses. Some ban all political parties, arrest all existing journalists and make ministerial appointments by political affiliations, yet they still call the process, democratic. Others arrest political opponents, object to dissension, refuse to develop opposing communities, rig elections, refuse to issue voters cards, register more voters than the population, but they still call the elections free and fair. Although the people may not be able to fight such governments, they make it difficult for it to rule and progress.

For the social contract theory to work, Africans must start to embrace Consensus Building which will resolve most of their conflicts by a win-win solution. They must form democratic governments at the village levels. Once these governments start to rule with the people, the idea that government was of the people, for the people and by the people will settle in because any government that doesn’t rule with the consent of the people will automatically not provide welfare and protection for the people. That is why it seems many African governments have taken a walk through the pages of their history rather than lead because if a man thinks he is leading but there is no one following behind, he is merely taking a walk. That does not mean there must be direct democracy. Not at all; representative democracy will still work but only if it comes from the people. It is only when a government is formed by the people and represents the people that the rule of law will gain a foothold. Without which we will hear of human rights year in and year out though we all believe “..... these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, but we will never taste it.

Until then, it high time to hand power to the people.

Please Release Bobby

I have known Bobby as a friend since when we were attending Primary School in Bonapriso Douala in the late 70s. I have never known him to be involved in any crime. But just because he is accused of overstaying his visa; a charge he has not been given a day in court to prove his case, does not make him an ardent criminal to be treated this way. Look at his eye as the picture speaks a thousand words! He was lucky to still be seeing as his eye was almost popped out when he was jailed with criminals. I do question the decision of the judges to still hold him in that jail. He has a wife (with no job) who just put to birth. Bobby has been an exemplary guy who only minds his business of serving people and treating everyone right.

Bobby is not a criminal in the sense of a thief, murderer, adulterer, swindler or terrorist. Even terrorists who threaten the lives of American citizens have never been treated this way. Show me any terrorists in Quantanamo Bay with this eye. Show me any terrorist on American soil; I mean those inflicting untold pain and suffering to the American people with his eye. Hellas, here is a man who only works and struggles to contribute to the progress of this country in an attempt to partake in the American Dream subjected to this nefarious treatment. Shouldn’t America be number one to defend human rights?

My friend, if you have never signed a petition for an immigrant; think about this guy and sign this one. Should he be going through all of this just because he is illegal? Shouldn’t he be compensated for his damaged eye? I mean this is a permanent damage. Is this the modified American Dream? I am appalled by this treatment and do urge people of good fate, to sign the petition requesting the immigration authorities to release this guy.
Please in God’s name release the young man.

Until then, may God be our judge!

Videos from home that touched me this week

1.

Any language could be so wonderful to praise God. Rather than play only for Ekpe the Manyu musicians should take time and play good gospel music.

Afo-A- Kom gives us a chilling reminder of the ills that bedevil Cameroon and Africa today. This same disease has pursued many to the western seas.

4.

This one reminds me of my days in the Northwest as I trod the hills of Sabong Garri and the hinterland of the rest of the province. IN addition, bottle dance gave us the same ambiance that we missed from Band Dance (Belle Sumbu).

Afo-A-Kom comes back with a perspicacious question about the destiny of man when his actions are the total opposite. Where are we really going nowadays?

Until then, enjoy.

Moussa Dadis Camara: Hero or Villain?

By the time he seized power through a bloodless military coup in December 23, 2008, he has been in the army for 17 years; holding different positions, and going through different studies and internships . Camara Moussa Dadis is a sociable, amicable and generous guy who has the burden of the country at heart. He reassured Guineans that him and his team are not power hungry. To Dadis, corruption is the killer of the Guineans.

Guinea Conakry is a country rich in “bauxite, iron ore, oil, diamonds, gold, uranium, hydropower, fish and salt” . Naturally, Guinea is not poor but it has been pillaged by corrupt government officials. Guinea Conakry has many unpaved roads despite being the lucrative trade route of South American cocaine to Europe. Children are even malnourished in Conakry’s only children hospital . What would be a better way to daunt such an evil if it is not by humiliating those who persist in it?

Guinea has had only two presidents: Sekou Toure and Lansana Conte since gaining independence from France in 1958. Why should two people rule a country for 51 years? When Camara Dadis took power, he dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution and all other intuitions because those institutions had become redundant that they could no more solve the problems of Guinea.

Certainly, no one doubts that corruption is the cankerworm or palmerworm that has penetrated into the very DNA of African life from politics to sport, and from religion to economics. The whole place is messed up! Now a man has come trying to inject the society with young blood and all of a sudden he is evil. Africans are too used to corruption that they think their corrupt state is normal.

It is normal for those who come with changes to be considered mad or crazy. Those who are used to the Bible will know a thing or two about Jesus. When he outlined his mission, the people took him to throw him into a cliff (Lk 4:28-30). Since they could not harm him, they mocked him that he had Beelzebub (chief of demons: Mk 3:22). People are allergic to change, and the change bringer is always considered a troubler or madman

There are many people today who read and listen to Camara Dadis thinking that he is a joker. Those who wanted the corrupt status quo to persist claim he is mad; he is disgracing the face of Guinea, he is exposing the nakedness of the Guineans.
Listen and listen well; he is clothing Guinea and giving hope to the younger generation. The young people all over Africa and in most developing countries should hold him in high esteem if he continues with these polices. So far, he gives hope to the unemployed graduates parading the streets of African countries as professional mendicants. The corrupt people will no more do it with courage as if it is a right; they will do it in fear knowing that if they are caught, it will be bad for them.

The West especially France is not happy because they see their interests threatened. They encourage the corrupt presidents of Africa so they can reap dividends with sham contracts where only the president and his acolytes benefit. The New York based Human Rights watch is only quick to point out what is happening in Guinea; they should have pointed millions of pages of what is happening in American jails; human beings locked up as caged animals just because of their color. Westerners encourage African presidents to think the president is the law but in their countries no one is bigger than the law.

To show that Guinea is on a good transition Camara Dadis has encouraged voters’ registration and lifted the ban on union and party activities. He boosted the confidence of Guineans when he told them that his coup is a coup against dictatorship and not against democracy since Guinea Conakry was under the iron fingers of Toure and Conte. He promised to hold elections in January 2010. Unlike his predecessors, people can at least march with minimal deaths. Hitherto he refused many attempts to bribe him and instead humiliated corrupt officials. Dadis tells the people that he will die too one day like every other person but wants to leave the people with the legacy of a just and transparent Guinea: a thing his predecessors deprived the Guineans of.

Until then, I wish him God’s protection.
