When Does God Punish Us for our Sins?

Confess and forsake and you obtain mercy because if you cover them you will not prosper (prov 28:13). This refers to the daily infractions we commit. If it meant original sin then it would be sin in singular. The original sin that brought us a nature of death is forgiven once we believe with our hearts and confess with our mouths that God raised him from the dead. That runs contrary to the belief that once Jesus died he forgave all sins. Not at all! There is soap in the market but one has to use it to be clean. You may have a thousand toothbrushes and ten tons of Colgate but if you do not use them to brush your teeth they will not be clean.

However, since we have an evil nature now we confess each time we sin we are forgiven. If you have the Holy Spirit in you he will remind you of all sins. The comforter will teach and remind you of sins (Jn 14:26). When the Holy Spirit comes He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment (Jn 16:8).
Consequently, there is no way anyone will forget their sin to incur the wrath of God. Therefore, we mush stay in the spirits so that our spirits can in turn communicate with the Spirit of God.

Nonetheless, if after the Holy Spirit has reminded us and we refused to confess or confess and refuse to forsake then we invite the wrath of God for the punishment of that sin.

Until then, God is very patient with sinners and man should be too!
